We are excited to announce an update to our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program at Spartan Mixed Martial Arts.
Beginning immediately, our Tuesday and Thursday evening Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes will now be taught in a No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu format.
This change gives students more opportunities to develop their grappling skills in a fast-paced environment while continuing to build the strong fundamentals that make Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so effective.
What Is No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practiced while wearing a gi, which allows practitioners to use grips on the jacket and pants to control their opponent.
In No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students train without the traditional gi and instead wear athletic training gear such as rash guards and shorts.
Without gi grips, students learn to rely more heavily on:
- Body positioning
- Leverage
- Timing
- Underhooks and clinches
- Pressure and control
While the clothing may be different, the principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu remain the same.
The goal is still to achieve dominant positions, escape bad positions, control your opponent, and apply submissions using technique rather than strength.
Why Train No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
No Gi training has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Many students enjoy No Gi because it:
- Develops strong positional awareness
- Improves scrambling ability
- Builds conditioning
- Enhances wrestling and takedown skills
- Translates well to mixed martial arts competition
No Gi also exposes students to different situations and challenges, helping them become more complete Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners.
A Complete Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Education
At Spartan MMA, we believe students benefit from understanding both gi and No Gi training.
Each format teaches valuable lessons and helps develop different aspects of grappling.
Training both allows students to:
- Improve overall technique
- Develop adaptability
- Gain a deeper understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
- Become more effective in self-defense and competition settings
Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, competition, or personal growth, learning both styles can accelerate your progress.
