Most Spartan students started with little or no martial arts experience. Our beginner program is designed to teach you step by step instead of throwing you into intense training before you’re ready.
You’ll begin by learning:
✓ Fundamental positions and movement
✓ Escapes and practical self-defense
✓ Control, leverage and positioning
✓ How to train safely and confidently
You will not be thrown into hard sparring on your first day. You’ll build your skills progressively and train at a pace appropriate for your experience.
Tuesday — 9:00 AM & 7:00 PM
Thursday — 9:00 AM & 7:00 PM
Saturday — 12:00 PM
Your free private intro is scheduled separately before your trial class.
Jon Heleotis has three decades of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience and has led Spartan Mixed Martial Arts in Ocean Township since 2010.
The program emphasizes practical skill, strong fundamentals, self-defense and long-term development—not simply memorizing techniques or preparing only for competition.
Whether you are brand new to Jiu-Jitsu or returning after time away, you’ll receive structured instruction designed to help you develop real skill and confidence.
Hear from students who have trained at Spartan and experienced the program for themselves.
Let me start buy saying, I have trained at many different BJJ schools. I have been training on and off since 1995, I have been here for about 10 years now. The owner and head instructor, Jon Heleotis, definitely knows his stuff and knows how to effectively pass that information on to his students. He is very patient and super easy going. Jon is always willing to spend extra time to answer any questions or work on any issues I may be having.
The class environment is very comfortable, the mats are always clean. There are no egos here. There is just the right amount of encouragement and motivation. I highly recommend this school. If you are interested in BJJ, I suggest you come by and check it out.
Spartan Mixed Martial Arts is a great place to train and learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Jon Heleotis is an amazing instructor and certainly the best around. His attention to detail and personalized instruction for every student is unmatched regardless of skill level.
The training atmosphere encourages the beginner to learn and the more advanced student to excel. Whether you’re a beginner or a serious tournament competitor this academy is the place to train. Not only do I train here, but my 6 and 11 year old daughters are also part of the amazing Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program. The kids program provides an encouraging, safe and clean environment where kids acquire amazing skills while having fun! Overall the team is ego free, humble, encouraging and competitive. I highly recommend the Black Belt instruction provided by Jon.
At Spartan Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is taught as a complete martial art—not just as a sport.
You’ll develop skills in:
✓ Stand-up and takedowns
✓ Ground control and escapes
✓ Submissions and positional control
✓ Practical self-defense
✓ Gi and No-Gi training
Our teaching is built around the principles that make Jiu-Jitsu work: leverage, positioning, connection, timing, pressure and control.
As your skills develop, you’ll learn to apply them against live resistance in a structured and safe training environment.
